Term 5, Week 3! 09.05.25

Throughout the week, we have been learning about and discussing why our country celebrates VE day and how this year marks 80 years. The children learnt that it was the end of WW2 and people came out into the streets to celebrate the news. They learnt that VE Day meant Victory in Europe Day, and we listened to the speech Winston Churchill gave on the radio to announce the end of the war. We created bunting with Owls and Falcons that we hung at the school entrance and created peace poppies and peace dove artwork that we put up in our class windows.
In English, we wrote our own versions of the story 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley'. We used our own characters we created last week when writing expanded noun phrases to change the character of Stanley and tried to include lots of contractions that were punctuated correctly with an apostrophe. The children even challenged themselves to try and include examples of the four different sentence types in their narratives and conjunctions!
We looked at coastal towns in geography and compared the coastal town of Weston-super-Mare to Yatton Keynell. The children looked at different images of Weston-super-Mare and discussed if we had anything like that in Yatton Keynell. Everyone agreed that Yatton Keynell didn't have a beach or pier that we could all go to, but Weston-super-Mare does.
We have been enjoying our yoga sessions in PE and have the chance to relax and stretch. The children also loved athletics this week. They worked incredibly hard as they had to run around the field! They had to develop their stamina and breathing techniques for long-distance running.
In science, we have continued to observe our plants for our investigation 'what happens to plants when they don't get what they need?' Here are our observations after 7 days:
We then set up a different plant investigation as we looked at the importance of plants needing light to grow healthy. Our question was 'how much light do plants need to grow?' We decided to use the cress plants that we are growing and put some on the windowsill to get light and some in the cupboard to grow in darkness.
Kestrels also had their class assembly today! I am incredibly proud of all the children remembering their lines off by heart and saying them loud and clear. They also sang and danced brilliantly to end our assembly. Well done Kestrels!
