RSHE Intent Statement

At By Brook Valley Primary School, we believe that Relationships, Sex and health education (RSHE) is an integral part of a child’s education. RSHE is about understanding the significance of family life, stable and loving relationships and respect for others, love and care. Our RSHE curriculum provides the early roots to enable our pupils to grow into moral and successful citizens. It is a lifelong process, which will equip our children with the appropriate knowledge, skills, values and attitudes which will enable them to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing in school and beyond, now and in the future.

 

It is our aim that all children:

  • Have an understanding of positive and healthy relationships.
  • Can have sensible and respectful conversations about a range of personal and global issues.
  • Have a positive body awareness.
  • Have an in depth knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and healthy.
  • Will be able to use the correct vocabulary to talk about their bodies.
  • Will be confident to discuss the changes that their bodies go through as they grow.
  • At the end of year 6, children will understand the effects and purpose of puberty and reproduction.

 

RSHE is taught as explicit lessons through PSHE and science curriculums and is interwoven into all aspects of school life. In PSHE, RSE is covered in the Jigsaw units ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing me’ and in science ‘Animals including humans’ and ‘Living things and their habitats’ will cover the statutory requirements. Knowledge and skills are appropriately sequenced to maximise learning for all children. This ensures that skills and knowledge is retained and built on year by year.

Children will be taught the correct vocabulary to talk about their bodies. They will be given lots of opportunities to use the vocabulary in class discussions and written work.

The school policy and whole school programme was available on the school website for consultation  from December 2021 to February 2022. Following this consultation, both have been ratified by the governing body, through the Foundation & Ethos committee and the Full Governing Body.
