Summer 1 week 3&4
We’ve had a brilliant couple of weeks in Year 3.
We ended Week 3 with our fantastic school trip to We The Curious. The children had an amazing time exploring all the hands‑on exhibits. They especially loved the Light and Shadow workshop, were completely captivated by the planetarium show, and enjoyed having time to discover the rest of the museum. Their curiosity and enthusiasm made it a wonderful day.
In Maths over the past two weeks, we have continued our work on measurement. In Week 3, the children learnt about capacity, measuring in millilitres and litres and comparing different amounts. In Week 4, we moved on to length, using centimetres and metres. The children enjoyed lots of practical measuring around the classroom and worked hard to estimate and record accurately.
In English, we read Chapter 2 of The Iron Man during Guided Reading. The children explored the key events and then as a class we acted out a summarised version which really helped deepen their understanding. They have now begun innovating their own version of the chapter, using the power of three, similes and rich description. Their ideas have been imaginative and full of detail.
In History our Anglo‑Saxons topic has continued to spark great interest. In Week 3, the children learnt what life was like in Britain when the Anglo‑Saxons arrived. They then wrote a diary entry from the perspective of either a Celtic Briton or an Anglo‑Saxon child, showing empathy and historical understanding. In Week 4, we learnt about Alfred the Great and the children created an informative fact file about his life and achievements.
In R&W We have been exploring different beliefs about how the world began. First, the children learnt how Humanists believe the world started. Last week, they compared this with Hindu beliefs about creation. This led to some thoughtful and respectful discussions.
In Science, we have been investigating what plants need to grow and survive. The children set up an experiment removing light, air, soil or water from different seeds to observe the effects. This week, we learnt about water transportation in plants, using coloured water to see how it travels through the stem. The children have shown great curiosity and careful scientific thinking.
In Computing we have continued learning about branching databases, sorting information and making decisions based on yes/no questions. The children are becoming confident in creating their own simple databases.
In French, the children have enjoyed learning the names of classroom items and practising their pronunciation through games and repetition.
Star of the Week
A huge well done to Emily, our Star of the Week. She has worked incredibly hard and shown a fantastic attitude to her learning. Well done, Emily.
Please continue to read 5x a week and record in the reading record and practice Times Tables Rock Stars.
Thank you for your continued support.
