ST1 - Week 5
Reminders
- Please continue practising Times Table Rock Stars regularly and make use of the mock check link included in the letter sent home.
The children’s scores are really improving, and you can clearly see how hard they are working to build their fluency and confidence. - We will be completing another mock Multiplication Check next week, so please continue practising at home as it is making a huge difference to the children’s confidence and recall speed.
Here’s What We’ve Been Learning This Week
English
In English, the children planned their persuasive letters ready for their hot write on Monday. They brought together all of the skills from this unit, including rhetorical questions, complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions, emotive language, expanded noun phrases with prepositional phrases, and modal verbs to make their arguments as persuasive as possible.
Maths
In maths, we continued developing our understanding of decimal place value. The children explored dividing by 10 and 100, and learnt what tenths and hundredths are made up of.
R & W
In R & W, we explored how Humanists believe the world began and compared these ideas with those from different religious worldviews.
PSHE
In PSHE, we continued our discussions about loss and focused on ways people can remember those or the things they have lost. The children thoughtfully explored the idea of memory boxes and considered what meaningful items could be included to help support memories and emotions.
Music
In music, we explored what an ostinato is. The children used their voices to create their own ostinatos and listened carefully to musical examples to identify which instruments were creating repeating patterns.
Swimming
We officially finished our swimming sessions this week. The children challenged themselves to complete their 25 metres, and every group made fantastic progress. It has been wonderful to see the confidence and development of all the children in the water.
History
In history, the children were introduced to Alfred the Great. They explored the timeline of his life, learnt about his achievements, and discussed how he became king.
