Week beginning 12/10/26
What a fantastic week we have had in Year 5! We have been busy learning, getting creative and working together on lots of exciting activities.
In English, we have been writing some amazing show, not tell pieces inspired by The Arrival. We have been developing our descriptive writing skills and thinking carefully about how we can show a character’s feelings through their actions, expressions and body language rather than simply telling the reader.
In Maths, we have been learning all about common multiples and common factors. We have been developing our mathematical thinking and practising how to identify numbers that share common factors and multiples. Keep practising those times tables to help you become even more confident!
We have also been learning about Black History Month. As part of this, we have been creating informative fact files about Nelson Mandela, discovering more about his life, his fight for equality and his important role in history. We have enjoyed learning about the people who have helped to make the world a fairer place.
In R&W, we finished our unit exploring the question of whether Jesus is the Messiah. We looked for evidence in the Old Testament that Christians believe points towards Jesus being the promised Messiah. We have been thinking carefully about how Christians connect these prophecies with the life and teachings of Jesus.
Thursday was full of excitement as we worked hard to get our displays ready for the Science Fair! We have put lots of effort into preparing our work, and we cannot wait to share it. Our Science Fair will take place on Tuesday 17th November in the afternoon. We will be keeping the displays up afterwards, so parents can pop in at the end of the school day to see all the fantastic work the children have been doing. We are very proud of everyone’s hard work and creativity!
We finished our week on Friday by joining the whole school outside for some gardening and tidying up as part of our theme of Looking After God’s Creation. It was lovely to work together to care for our school environment and do our bit to look after the world around us. A huge thank you to Mr and Mrs Woodward for giving up their time to help us with this. We really appreciate your support!
Next week, we will finish school at our normal time on Wednesday before breaking up for half-term. We hope everyone has a wonderful, restful holiday and enjoys a well-deserved break. We look forward to seeing you all after half-term!
Have a lovely weekend! 😊

From investigating in Science to celebrating Harvest, Year 5 have had a week packed with learning and memorable moments!
In English, we have been recapping the different word classes, as well as exploring the different types of nouns. We have been developing our understanding of how words are used in sentences and how they help us to communicate effectively.
In Maths, we have been learning about inverse operations and using these to solve pyramid puzzles and missing number problems. We have been putting our problem-solving skills to the test and thinking carefully about how addition and subtraction can help us find the answers.
Our Science Fair preparations have continued this week as we completed our experiments and wrote up our evaluations. We have reflected on our results and thought about what went well and what we might do differently next time. On Thursday, we will be spending the day putting our presentation boards together and getting everything ready to showcase our hard work. If anyone has any large cardboard boxes that could be used to make presentation boards, we would be extremely grateful for your donations!
In Religion and Worldviews (R&W), we have continued learning about Jesus and how he was part of God's big plan. We have been developing our understanding of this important part of the Christian faith.
As part of Black History Month, we spent a lesson researching Nelson Mandela and learning about his life, achievements and why he was such an important figure in history. This gave us an opportunity to reflect on his fight for equality and justice and the impact he had on the world.
On Thursday, we also enjoyed celebrating Harvest with you at our Harvest Service. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a special occasion.
To finish the week, we took part in a PSHE lesson on kindness as part of Hello Yellow Day. We thought about the importance of being kind to ourselves and others, showing empathy and looking after our mental health.
Well done, Year 5, for another fantastic week of learning! We are looking forward to bringing our Science Fair projects together and sharing all our hard work with you soon. Have a lovely weekend!

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 5!
In English, we have started exploring our new class book, The Arrival. The children have already been making predictions and discussing the intriguing illustrations, and we are looking forward to delving deeper into the story over the coming weeks.
In Maths, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction, making sure we are confident using the column methods before moving on to solving missing number problems. We have also tackled our first Year 5 arithmetic test, giving the children a chance to practise the skills they have been learning.
We have been putting the finishing touches to our Harvest posters in preparation for our Harvest Service next Thursday. We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating together.
In Science, we carried out our final Titanic investigations. One group experienced just how challenging the freezing conditions would have been by placing their hands in icy water before attempting tasks such as screwing nuts and bolts together and building a tower. Another group investigated the design of the Titanic by creating different boats from tin foil to see which could hold the most passengers. The children thoroughly enjoyed these practical investigations and made some thoughtful observations.
We also continued our Titanic learning during Guided Reading, discovering lots of fascinating new facts about the famous ship and its passengers.
In Music, we have been exploring chords and learning how contrasting chords can be used to compose music that represents different scenes from nature. The children enjoyed experimenting with different sounds and discussing the moods they created.
Finally, we have been busy finalising Parents' Evening appointment slots today. We still have a few appointments available, so if you have not yet returned your form, please do so as soon as possible.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to another fantastic week of learning!

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Year 5!
In English, we have started writing our own narratives inspired by the film Up. We have been using our imaginations to create exciting stories and developing our descriptive writing skills to engage our readers.
In Maths, we have been learning how to round numbers up to one million. We have practised identifying the correct digit to look at and applying our rounding rules to increasingly challenging numbers.
In Geography, we have continued our learning about population. We have been researching how the population of Yatton Keynell has changed over the years and exploring some of the reasons why populations grow and change over time.
During our R&W lessons, we learnt about where our lunch comes from and the journey food takes from farm to fork. We discussed the different people involved in producing, transporting and selling food in preparation for our upcoming Harvest Service.
In Science, we have been planning our second Titanic investigations, which we will carry out next week. One investigation will explore how cold temperatures affect the body, while another will investigate which design of boat can hold the most passengers before sinking.
In French, we continued learning about body parts and animals. We used this knowledge to create some very imaginative animal mash-ups and then described them using French vocabulary.
On Friday, we celebrated European Languages Day by learning about Hungary. We learnt where Hungary is located in Europe, what the Hungarian flag looks like and how to say "hello" and "thank you" in Hungarian. We also enjoyed learning how to write our names using Ancient Hungarian script.
It has been another busy, productive and fun-filled week in Year 5. We are very proud of all the hard work the children have put into their learning.
Have a lovely weekend!

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Year 5! We have been working hard across all of our subjects and have enjoyed lots of practical and creative learning.
In English, we have finished writing our speeches. We have been thinking carefully about how to structure our ideas and use persuasive language to make our speeches engaging for an audience. In Maths, we have been learning how to use number lines with numbers up to 1,000,000 and have practised finding missing numbers by using our understanding of place value.
We have continued our learning about Kabaddi in PE, developing our skills and understanding of the game. We have also been busy learning our street dance routines with Mr Peters, working hard on our coordination, timing and performance skills.
PSHE was great fun this week as we took part in a competition with the Bumbles of Honeywood. Our challenge was to build the tallest tower we could using only marshmallows and spaghetti! It was certainly trickier than it looked, and we had to communicate, work as a team and think creatively to make our towers stable.
In R&W, we have been exploring evidence from the Bible that shows that Jesus was raised as a Jew. We have been looking carefully at biblical evidence and considering what it tells us about Jesus' upbringing and Jewish identity.
Science was particularly exciting this week as we carried out our lifeboat huddle experiment. We investigated which passengers would have stayed warmest in cold conditions: those in a crowded lifeboat or those in a less crowded one. We linked our investigation to the passengers who were released early when panic set in during the Titanic disaster. Our experiment helped us understand how being close together can help people retain body heat.
In Music, we have started creating our own compositions inspired by nature. We have been experimenting with sounds, rhythms and musical ideas to create pieces that represent aspects of the natural world. In Computing, we have been learning about different search engines and how to use them effectively, thinking carefully about how to find useful and reliable information online.
Have a lovely weekend!
