St 1 - Week 2

Reminders

  • Please keep going with Times Table practice at home. The children’s rapid recall is definitely improving, and their confidence has massively boosted — all of the extra practice is making a real difference!

Here’s What We’ve Been Learning This Week

English
In English, the children completed their persuasive letters to Miss Davies, arguing whether the Iron Man should remain trapped or be set free. They used rhetorical questions to make the reader think carefully, emotive language to stir feelings, alongside modal verbs and complex sentences to strengthen their arguments and make their writing as persuasive as possible.

Maths
In maths, the children completed a mid-term assessment and continued their work on decimals. They explored how to make a whole using tenths and then hundredths, building confidence with decimal place value.

Science
In science, we planned our investigation to explore which factors speed up evaporation and condensation. The children made thoughtful scientific predictions, using key vocabulary from our unit and justifying their ideas using their understanding of states of matter and how materials change state.

History
In history, we brought together everything we have learnt so far about the Anglo-Saxons and Alfred the Great by creating detailed mind maps to showcase our knowledge. This has prepared us well for continuing our learning about King Alfred’s influence after half term.

Design and Technology (D.T.)
In DT, the children made their own seasonal tarts using fruits or vegetables that are currently in season. They taste-tested four different foods, describing and rating their flavour and texture. The children also practised important food preparation skills, including using a bridge hold and claw grip safely when chopping ingredients.

French
In French, the children learnt how masculine and feminine nouns affect the spelling of determiners and adjectives. They then applied this knowledge by writing sentences describing clothing, including size and colour, while carefully selecting the correct spellings.

Folk Festival
The children thoroughly enjoyed attending the Folk Festival today. They took part in a variety of traditional dances and enjoyed getting involved with the wider community. It was a lovely experience for everyone, and the children represented By Brook Valley brilliantly with their enthusiasm and behaviour throughout the day.

I hope you all have a wonderful half term and that the children enjoy a well-deserved rest after all of their hard work.
