Summer 2 Week 1
A great week back!
We’ve had a brilliant first week back in Year 3. The children settled quickly, showed great enthusiasm for their learning and have made a really positive start to the new half-term.
This week in English, the whole school took part in a Hot Write. Year 3 wrote their own stories inspired by The Wild Robot, using the narrative skills we have been practising. The children planned their ideas carefully and worked hard to include descriptive language, clear story structure and engaging characters.
In Maths, we began our new topic on time, focusing on telling the time to five minutes, using “past” and “to”. This is a tricky skill, and regular practice makes a huge difference. It would be really helpful if children could continue practising reading clocks at home.
Our History learning explored an exciting moment from the Anglo‑Saxon period: when Alfred the Great was attacked by the Vikings in Chippenham on Twelfth Night.
The children acted out the events to help them understand what happened and how Alfred escaped. They then used this drama to support their writing, producing thoughtful recounts of the attack.
In Computing, we have been learning about coding using Scratch. The children explored how to move a sprite around the screen using simple programming blocks. They experimented with directions, movement and sequencing, showing great problem‑solving skills.
In Music, the children have been learning a Vikings song linked to our History topic. They also practised reading and using musical notation, clapping rhythms and performing short patterns together.
In French, the children completed mini-presentations based on items found in the classroom. They described each object using colours, numbers and simple descriptive phrases, showing growing confidence in speaking aloud.
