Term 5, Week 1! 25.04.25

Welcome back for term 5! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break.
This week in maths we started a new unit on measurement. We started by looking at centimetres and what we might measure in centimetres. We learnt that when measuring and drawing lines with a ruler we must start on 0! We then looked at metres and how metres are much bigger than centimetres. A key fact we learnt is that 1m=100cm. We then estimated what we thought was bigger or shorter than 1m in the classroom and then used a metre stick to check our estimates.
In English and reading, we have been focussing on practising SATs-style questions for SPAG and comprehension. The children persevered and showed great resilience.
Our topic has a geography focus for the summer term, and we started by recapping the 7 continents and 5 oceans. The children amazed me with how much they remembered from the beginning of year 2 and applied their globe/map skills by labelling the continents and oceans on a map.
We started our unit on plants in science this week! We started by looking at what seeds and bulbs grow into, and I showed the children the seeds I planted ready for our investigations later on in the term. The children couldn't believe the difference in some of the seeds in 3 days!
We also looked at how new plants are grown from mature plants. We looked at the life cycle of a bean plant - especially as that is what we are growing! - and discovered that new plants are made from seed dispersal.
