Summer Term 1 Week 1

Nature walks and taste testing!

This week, Falcons have made a fantastic start to the summer term and it has been wonderful to see everyone back in school smiling after the Easter break!

In English, we began by watching a short film about a turtle who showed great hope and resilience as it faced many challenges. The children were inspired to write their own stories based on the film, and it was a great opportunity for me to assess their narrative writing. We also introduced our new class text, The Queen’s Hat by Steve Antony. The children thoroughly enjoyed the story and have already started learning actions to help them retell it with confidence and expression.

Our English learning links closely with our new History topic, where we will be exploring the question: Why was Queen Elizabeth II a significant monarch for the Commonwealth? In our first lesson, we learnt all about what a monarch is and discussed their role. The children have especially loved exploring our new Buckingham Palace role play area, where they have been busy acting as kings, queens, and royal guards!

In Maths, we have been learning how to measure and compare the mass of different objects. The children used cubes to measure weight and made sensible predictions about how heavy objects might be. They practised using key vocabulary such as “heavier” and “lighter” and enjoyed comparing a range of classroom items to find the heaviest and the lightest.

In Science, we have been learning about the seasons, with a particular focus on spring. We took our learning outside on a spring nature walk, where the children spotted and ticked off lots of signs of the new season. It was lovely to see their excitement as they explored the changes happening around them.

In DT, we tried different combinations of fruit together to see what we wanted to use when making our smoothies!

It has been a brilliant first week back, and we are all looking forward to another exciting term of learning ahead!
