Spring 2 Week 2

Owls have had a lovely week! We ‘travelled’ to Brazil, in South America. We learnt that Brazil is a big country and that it is hot. We looked at pictures of Brazil’s flag and the landscape and described what we could see. We learnt all about the Rio Carnival, listened to some traditional Brazilian samba and made our own carnival masks!

In our writing task, we drew a picture of something from Brazil and wrote a fact about Brazil. There were some amazing drawings of Brazil’s flag, the beach, Rio Carnival hats and some very exotic parrots!

In maths, the Owls began learning about teen numbers. We counted forwards (and backwards!) to 20, and practised ordering our numbers from 0 all the way up to 20! We began to look at the pattern of teen numbers being made up of 10 and another number.

We began some new PE this term! Learning how to play netball with Up and Under and practising our ball skills. The children are constantly impressing me with their enthusiasm and eager attitude to trying new things in PE. We learnt that when passing, throwing and rolling, we need to check the person we are passing to is ready, and so practised asking "[name], are you ready?" before passing the ball. We also learnt that by looking at the person and moving our arms towards them when we roll, it can help us aim!

This week we went back out on a Welly Walk! We had a great time jumping in the large puddles and made a 'journey map' of our walk, collecting leaves, sticks and flowers that we found, then placing them in order to show the story of our walk.

We also began our reading swap with Year 3 this week. Each Owl student is partnered with an Osprey student, and each Friday they share a book together. The children had a lovely time listening to the Ospreys practise their reading and found we all enjoyed a lot of the same books! Hairy Maclary and Where's Wally were some particular favourites!

Well done to our Star of the Week… Rufus! Rufus has been consistently demonstrating a positive and hard-working attitude to learning and has been really improving his handwriting. Well done Rufus!

Some reminders for next week:

  • Next week it is World Book Week, with World Book Day being celebrated on Thursday! Throughout the week, children will be taking part in lots of exciting World Book Week related activities, including some reading swaps where other class teachers will share a book with Owls! On World Book Day on Thursday, children are invited to wear a ‘story hat’.
  • On Tuesday it is our first 'Linger and Learn' session, where parents are invited to stay and take part in a lesson with their children! This session's focus will be on reading and story telling, and will run from 9:00-9:30 on Tuesday morning. It would be wonderful to see many of you there!
  • On Friday it is Owls Class’ Cake Sale! Parent volunteers would be welcome to help set up the table and man the sale if available. All the money raised will go towards new books for Owls Class Library.
  • Please can you make sure your child is dressed according to our uniform policy, especially with headwear.
