Spring 2 Week 4

This week the Owls travelled to Antarctica! We learnt the difference between a country and a continent, and used our researching skills to find out facts about Antarctica. We found out that Antarctica is not only cold, it is the coldest and windiest place in the world! We learnt that there are lots of penguins, whales and seals there, but that you won't find any polar bears! We used some of our facts in our writing task this week, to accompany a drawing of a penguin.

In maths, we learnt how to differentiate between odd and even numbers. We learnt that even numbers can be grouped by 2's, whilst odd numbers will always have one left over. We used numicon to help us sort our numbers into odd and even, noticing that the even numbers always had a flat top whilst the odd numbers had a bumpy top!

The children made some beautiful penguin paintings this week, using a variety of skills learnt in previous weeks. We painted a colourful background and then used white paint and bubble wrap to print some 'snow' onto it! We then practised our cutting skills to collage a penguin onto our snowy scenery. The children followed instructions beautifully, helping each other along the way.

For PE this week we continued on with our ball skills. We practised our rolling again, but this time our circle was much bigger! Then we moved onto throwing and catching. We applied the same rules as with rolling (asking if the person is ready, using our eyes and hands to aim) but this time we also added in being ready to catch the ball by putting our arms out and looking at the person throwing. We used underarm throws, and I was very impressed by the children's accuracy!

For our Welly Walk we made a map of the playground! We worked in teams to explore the outside and used crayons to make our maps. The children had to think about what symbols and colours they could use to represent different key things to include on our map, such as the grass on the field.

Well done to our star of the week... Elara! Elara worked super hard in her maths this week and has been impressing all the grown-ups in Owls class with her hard work and effort. Well done Elara!

Next week is our last full week of Spring 2 and we will be exploring Japan!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! :)
