Summer Term 1 Week 1

First week back!

Kestrels have settled back in to school well and are ready for the summer term!

We enjoyed starting off with our new topics!

English

In English, we are reading 'The Queens Hat' and basing our narrative writing around the book. This week, the children have familiarised themselves with the story, being able to act it out with actions. We have practised this as a class and in pairs! Along with a story map to help us with the key points of the story. The children have written their own sentences about visiting different London landmarks by using conjunctions to put their ideas together. Children have brought home the words to the story we are learning, so they can practise it with actions.

History

Our question for History this term is 'Why was Queen Elizabeth II a significant monarch for the Commonwealth?' We have started off our new topic by discovering what a monarch is and why they are important. Children wrote sentences about what makes a good monarch and why. Then they made their very own crowns which had keywords on them as well as their well-thought-out sentences. They all looked great!

Music

In music this week we learnt a British folk song called 'My Bonnie Lied Over the Ocean'. We discussed how we live in the British Isles and that we are surrounded by the coastal seaside in every direction. Because of this, we experimented with our bodies, voices and percussion instruments to make a seaside soundscape.

Science

This term in Science, our topic is on what plants need to grow. This week, we planted our very own broad beans and wrote in our bean diary about how we did this. We are excited to watch them grow!

Thank you for a great first week back!

Reports went home this week as well as Kestrels curriculum newsletter for this term!

Remember waterbottles and suncream as the weather is getting warmer!

See you next week!
