Class Blog 25/26
PE Days this term are Tuesdays and Fridays.

We’ve been sharpening our number skills by learning a new and efficient way to calculate multiples of two-digit numbers. This helped us tackle more complex division problems, even those with remainders! We also explored how to express remainders as both fractions and decimals, and discussed when each form is most useful. Our confidence is growing every day!
In RE, we reached an important milestone by answering our big topic question:
“What is the best way for a Muslim to show commitment to Allah?”
The children gave thoughtful, respectful, and insightful responses, showing a deep understanding of the Five Pillars of Islam. It was wonderful to see how much they’ve learned and how well they can express their ideas.
This week in Computing, we explored how the internet works behind the scenes. We learned about IP addresses and how information travels across the internet in data packets. It was fascinating to discover how our devices communicate with each other and how data finds its way to the right place!
Our musical focus this term is the dramatic and atmospheric piece “Fingal’s Cave” by Mendelssohn. We’ve been listening closely and learning to describe the music using terms like dynamics, pitch, and texture. The children have been brilliant at identifying how these elements help create the mood and story of the piece.

What a fantastic week we've had in Eagles Class!
In Maths, we've been diving into the world of prime, square, and cubed numbers. The children have been exploring patterns, solving puzzles and challenging themselves to identify these special numbers in different contexts. It’s been brilliant to see their confidence grow as they tackle increasingly complex problems!
Our History topic this term is World War II and this week we had the incredible opportunity to visit the REME Museum in Lyneham. The trip brought our learning to life, with fascinating exhibits and hands-on activities that deepened our understanding of the war and the role of engineering and mechanics during that time. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity throughout the visit.
In RE, we continued our exploration of Islam by comparing the lives and teachings of Muhammad and Jesus. The class showed real maturity in recognising the many similarities between these two important figures and reflected thoughtfully on their messages of compassion, peace, and faith.
On Friday, we celebrated World Mental Health Day with a focus on gratitude and kindness. Each child completed a gratitude journal, thinking about the people, places, and moments that bring them joy. We also launched our Kindness Challenge, encouraging the children to spread positivity in our school and wider community. Eagles Class will be bringing home their challenge worksheet and the goal is to complete as many acts of kindness as possible over the next week. From helping at home to cheering up a friend, every small act makes a big difference!
Congratulations to Eagles Class Star of the Week - Rowan!

Eagles Class have had a fantastic week full of learning, discovery and hands-on science!
In Maths, we’ve been working with multiples and common factors, using them to solve problems and explain our reasoning. The children have shown great resilience and logical thinking throughout.
In English, we’ve been learning about simple, compound and complex sentences. We practised writing each type, explored how they can be used effectively in our writing, and discussed the impact they have on the reader. The children have been thoughtful and creative, and it’s been brilliant to see their confidence grow.
On Tuesday, we had an exciting visit to a solar farm, where we investigated the biodiversity of invertebrates and plants in the solar farm environment. Back at school, we carried out our own experiments using solar cells and multi-meters to find the best position for solar panels around our school. We then explored further by asking our own questions, such as: Can one solar cell power a motor and a buzzer? Would two solar cells increase the voltage? The children worked collaboratively and scientifically to test their ideas.
Congratulations to Eagles Star of the Week – Phoebe!

This week, Eagles Class have been reflecting on the Christian festival of Harvest. As part of our celebrations, the children wrote heartfelt thankfulness prayers on leaf-shaped cutouts, which now form our beautiful Harvest Thankfulness Tree. We look forward to sharing this with everyone during the Harvest service at St. Margaret’s Church on 9th October.
To make the most of the seasonal produce around us at By Brook Valley School, pupils worked in their School Houses to bake delicious apple cakes. It was a wonderful way to honour the spirit of Harvest and avoid food waste. Before enjoying their cakes, the children listened to a special Harvest prayer written by our Worship Leaders.

Eagles Class have taken on the role of Young Leaders at By Brook Valley School. We identified some famous inspirational leaders and thought about what made them such good role models. We then discussed how we could embody those characteristics and become good role models to the younger pupils in our school. We split into 5 groups and each group learned a different playground game. Once we were secure with the rules of each game, we taught them to groups from KS1. Everyone had a brilliant time! I was so proud of the patience and kindness shown by Eagles Class who really supported the younger children. The Young Leaders will be on duty in the playground at lunchtime break to help any child who needs it.
Congratulations to our star of the week - Maya

In maths this week, we have been using place value to find numbers up to 10 million on bank number lines. This was quite tricky for some, and so we will recap our prior place value knowledge from Year 5 to make sure we are really secure in this area.
Using our class book (Letters from the Lighthouse) and a clip from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe film, Eagles Class have been using evidence and clues to describe main characters and settings. We then put this into practice and wrote our own descriptive narratives trying to show, not tell, the reader about the characters' personalities.
We started our science topic this week. The area of science we are focusing on is chemistry. We will be investigating dyes and creating our own experiments to answer one of three question:
1 - Which fabric is the best for dying?
2 - Which dye produces the strongest colour?
3 - Which mordant fixes the dye onto the fabric the best?
Congratulations to our star of the week – Ellie!

It has been wonderful to see Eagles Class again after our summer break. Everyone has settled wonderfully into the new routines and expectations of Year 6. I have already had reports back from the staff on lunchtime duty that this year's Eagles Class are really responsible when carrying out their hall duty roles!
We have started to read our class book – Letters from the lighthouse – in English lessons this week. This book is set in WWII so it is linked to our history topic, and we have encountered lots of new vocabulary such as telegram, evacuee and Luftwaffe. In our maths lessons, we have been recapping place value to ensure we have a secure base on which to build upon in Year 6.
